Center for Basic and Preclinical Sciences

Morphological Sciences Laboratories

A state-of-the-art Center for Basic and Preclinical Sciences has been made available to medical students to ensure quality education. The Center consists of the Basic Science of Medicine Laboratory (eighth floor) and the Morphological Sciences Laboratory (ninth floor).

The Morphological Sciences Laboratory provides facilities for teaching anatomy. It consists of a lecture room equipped with multimedia and high-fidelity anatomical models made with 3D technology (read more about it here), a normal anatomy room (preserved specimens) and a dissection room. This layout and equipment of the space allows the subject to be carried out in one place, in comfortable conditions.

The rooms are equipped with modern equipment necessary for classes in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, genetics and histology, among others. The laboratories include laboratory centrifuges from Eppendorf, UV/VIS spectrophotometers including a picodrop and gradient thermocyclers from Biometra. During classes, students use a gel visualization system, an ELISA plate reader, incubators and a laminar flow cabinet. In classes, students have the opportunity to learn about the equipment used in hospitals to diagnose diseases of the heart (ECG), hearing (audiometer), respiratory system (spirometer). The university has a collection of histological slides that students can view using Leica microscopes. It also has an epifluorescence microscope that allows observation of interesting elements of a cell after labeling them with fluorochromes.

The space and equipment of the laboratories provide comfortable and health and safety compliant conditions for acquiring and deepening knowledge in the biological sciences.
