In recent months, we have heard about a number of scandals at universities in Poland, concerning corruption, diploma trading, nepotism, bullying, and physical violence. Furthermore, the costs of studying far from home require from students additional financial expenses (renting and living expenses, travel, etc.). All of these criteria lead some students to wonder whether it's worth devoting time, money, and energy to obtaining a degree that ultimately may be worth little and no longer automatically guarantees (as it once did) professional success or social advancement.
Furthermore, there are high-quality online courses available (Coursera, Udemy, Khan Academy, etc.) that guarantee qualifications and knowledge offered and recognized by reputable companies. What's more, they offer this in a much shorter timeframe than the 2-4 years required for traditional higher education, are more affordable, and in a format perhaps more convenient for students.
Furthermore, advanced artificial intelligence algorithms make knowledge that once took 2-4 years to acquire seem accessible on a computer in a matter of minutes.
So, is higher education just a diploma and theoretical qualifications? Do students gain other skills and additional benefits that make studying worthwhile?
We will be discussing these dilemmas on December 6th at 8:00 AM, room 58. Join us!
