Prof. Błażej Kuźniacki Awarded the Prestigious Fulbright Senior Award
Professor Kuźniacki was the only recipient of the award in the field of legal sciences, highlighting both the significance of his scholarly achievements and the importance of the planned research for the development of contemporary legal sciences.
Research at the University of Michigan
The project will be carried out at the Center for International and Comparative Law at the University of Michigan Law School in the United States. Academic supervision will be provided by Professor Reuven Avi-Yonah and Professor Julian Arato, internationally recognized experts in international tax and investment law.
“Receiving the Fulbright Senior Award is a tremendous honor for me. The project focuses on a relatively underexplored area where different branches of law intersect. It is precisely at the intersection of disciplines that the most compelling research questions and inspiring academic challenges emerge. The University of Michigan provides an outstanding environment for conducting this type of research,” said Prof. Błażej Kuźniacki.
Professor Kuźniacki will work on a research project entitled:
“International Investment Treaties: A Harmful Restriction on State Tax Sovereignty or Protection Against the Abuse of Taxing Powers?”
The project is of particular relevance to the host country, as the United States has never lost an international investment arbitration case, while U.S. investors initiate such proceedings against other states more frequently than investors from any other country. This raises important questions regarding the unique use of international investment treaties by the United States as a tool for strategically positioning its economy in the global marketplace and the implications of this practice for the exercise of taxing powers.
From a broader global perspective, the project will also contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between international law and major contemporary tax developments, including global minimum taxation, digital taxes, and the role of tax systems in supporting the energy transition.
“I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Professor Błażej Kuźniacki on receiving the Fulbright Senior Award. This is one of the most prestigious distinctions in the international academic community, granted to scholars whose research makes a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge. Professor Kuźniacki’s success confirms not only his outstanding academic standing but also the growing international recognition of the research conducted at the Faculty of Law and Administration of Lazarski University,” said Dr hab. Eligiusz Krześniak, Professor at Lazarski University and Dean of the Faculty of Law and Administration.
